Hello, friends!
This is the temporary home of the North Coast Journal blog. We’re going to get this party started here on WordPress before that glorious day when we make the jump to our own homepage. How long will we be here? Maybe a couple of weeks. Probably a month or more. Perhaps as long as a decade. But we’ve got things to say, damn it, and we’re not going to wait around any longer.
Comments reeking of trollery will be disemvoweled. Repeat offenders will be banished.
The North Coast Journal is an alternative weekly newspaper in Humboldt County, Calif. — home of redwoods, earthquakes, strange politics and high-grade marijuana.

Dear Emma Center,
I just wanted to inform you that The Arkley Center
for Performing arts took my deposit money, booked my
date, and then one month after I had started my
transactions with them, backed out of allowing us to
perform our show in their facility (The Vagina
Monologues). The Times Standard and The Arcata Eye are
going to do a report on it as they are both appalled
that the Arkley Center calls themselves a “center
Stage for the Community”, yet declines to hold
beneficiary performances in their facility to help end
violence against women here in their own local
community. Please help me spread the word, as I was
made verbal promises by them (they still have my money
and I need to get it back!!) and then given the boot.
If you could please forward this email and ask the
members of this community to please Call the Arkley
Center for performing arts and express their
unhappiness about this decision (442-1956) as well as
Venue-tech…For more information on Venue Tech please
visit http://www.venuetech.com/ This is the production
management company that runs The Arkley Center for
Performing Arts. They (venue tech), along with the
Oakley’s made “the final decision to say no because
this community wants to see ballets and Nut Cracker
performances, nothing controversial”, as said by Judy
Barkett (head of Venue Tech) to me on the phone
yesterday. Please call her and let her know that this
is not true. Humboldt county wants and needs to see
this beautiful production. Shame on her and The
Arkely’s for not supporting us in or mission to make
money for Humboldt Domestic Violence Services, North
Coast Rape Crisis, and The Emma Center. The number for
Judy Barkett/Venue Tech is 1-415-409-4402. When I
asked her who made the final decision to say no, she
told me “we all did”, meaning her and Don (the head of
Venue tech in San Francisco and the Arkleys
themselves)

Yep. Thanks for the tip, though.

So the top ten stories are out, and seems
the Palco thing was right up there. So, Journal, how many reporters did you send to the oral arguments yesterday? You do know to what I refer, yes?
Dec. 20, 2007 at 1:35 pm
To Santa Rosa? None. We’re not made of money.
If it were an actual trial, maybe we would have gone. But yesterday’s hearing was just something that the lawyers call “appellate-judge-level oral argumentification,” so we figured what the hell.
Seriously, though: Resources are limited, and the DA fraud suit is more or less an afterthought at this point.
